Description
Premyoga (“The Yoga of Love”) is a concept and teaching emphasized by Swami Vivekananda, focusing on divine love (prem) as the path to spiritual realization. In this approach, love is not directed toward worldly objects but toward the Divine. It is pure, selfless, and unconditional. Swami Vivekananda explained that true love for God leads to union with the divine — a yoga or a union through prem (love).
In Premyoga:
-
Love is considered the highest form of worship.
-
The devotee surrenders completely to God, forgetting their own ego and desires.
-
The emphasis is on bhakti (devotion) but taken to its highest and most intense form, where love itself becomes the means and the end.
-
The goal is to love God for love’s sake alone, not for any material gain, fear, or reward.
-
This path transcends rituals, intellectualism, or dry duties — it flows from the heart.
Swami Vivekananda, inspired by his master Sri Ramakrishna, taught that God can be realized through intense and pure love. He often encouraged seekers to feel God as the nearest and dearest, much like a lover, friend, or parent, depending on what relationship (bhava) the soul naturally resonates with.
Key aspects of Premyoga include:
-
Selflessness: No bargaining with God.
-
Intensity: Longing and crying for God with the deepest emotions.
-
Purity: Love untainted by selfish motives.
-
Faith and surrender: Trusting completely in God’s will.
Swami Vivekananda saw Premyoga as a powerful, accessible, and transformative spiritual path, especially suited for those whose hearts are full of emotion and yearning.
