Valmiki Ramayan is one the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Mahabharata. Valmiki is revered as aadi kavi, the first poet, and author of Ramayana- the first epic poem. This 2 volume set from India’s famous Gita press consists of 24,000 shlokas and 7 kaandas. Ramayan tells the story of Prince Rama, from the city of Ayodhya and kingdom of Kosala, whose wife Sita is abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. It depicts the duties and relationships of ideal characters like – father, brother, husband, wife and king. This was published by Gita Press Gorakhpur, the world’s largest publisher of Hindu religious texts. It was first established in 1923 to promote Hinduism through its 2000+ books across 15 languages. The book is originally written in Sanskrit, however includes easy to read English translation and meaning of the text
