Description

The Indus (Sindhu) is praised in the Rig Veda as the “great river of the gods” and is said to flow from the abode of Shiva in the Himalayas. In Ladakh, where the river’s source lies at the sacred Seng Ge Khang (‘Lion’s Mouth’) glacier, the water is regarded as especially pure. Scriptures such as the Mahabharata and Puranas declare that a sip of Sindhu water removes sins, grants the merit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice, and aids in liberation. Pilgrims collect it in small copper or silver vessels for daily puja and for use in rituals that invoke the river’s protective power.
