Description

The Saryu River, flowing beside the sacred city of Ayodhya, holds immense spiritual significance in Hinduism. It is mentioned in several scriptures, including the Vedas, Ramayana, and Skanda Purana, as a divine river that purifies the soul and grants liberation (moksha).

According to the Ramayana, Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Shri Ram, is situated on the banks of the Saryu. The river is said to have witnessed all the divine pastimes (leelas) of Lord Ram and his lineage. Bathing in the holy waters of the Saryu is believed to remove sins and bestow divine blessings.

The Saryu’s sacred waters, collected from Ayodhya, are revered as teerth jal (holy pilgrimage water). Scriptures say that taking a dip or performing tarpan (offering to ancestors) in the Saryu grants the merit of performing great austerities. The Skanda Purana and Padma Purana glorify the Saryu as one of the seven most sacred rivers (along with Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, and Sindhu).

Spiritually, the Saryu represents divine consciousness and purity of heart, flowing eternally through the city sanctified by Lord Ram’s presence. The holy water from Ayodhya thus carries not only physical purity but also the vibration of divine dharma, devotion, and liberation.
