Description

According to Hindu scriptures, the Gomati River (also spelled Gomti) is one of the most sacred rivers of India, revered as a purifier of sins and a bestower of divine merit. It is mentioned in the Rig Veda, Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, and Brahma Purana, where it is described as a celestial river descending to Earth to bless humanity.

The Skanda Purana glorifies Gomati as a manifestation of the Goddess Ganga, who came down to Earth to purify the world. It is said that a mere sight (darshan), touch, or bath (snan) in the holy waters of Gomati destroys accumulated sins and grants moksha (liberation).

The river originates from Gomat Taal (Fulhaar Jheel) near Pipra village in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, and flows through the sacred cities of Lucknow and Dwarka before merging into the Ganga and the Arabian Sea, depending on the textual reference (since there are multiple Gomatis in Indian tradition).

In Dwarka, the Gomati River holds even greater sanctity — known as Gomati Sangam Teerth, where Lord Krishna performed his divine pastimes. Bathing here is said to cleanse all sins committed in countless lifetimes.

Spiritually, the Gomati represents purity, devotion, and the flow of dharma. The Gomati Chakra, sacred stones found in the riverbed (especially near Dwarka), are worshipped as symbols of Lord Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi, believed to bring peace, prosperity, and protection from negative energies.

📜 Scriptural References:

  • Skanda Purana: Declares the Gomati as a river of divine origin that grants liberation.

  • Padma Purana: Mentions that bathing in the Gomati is equivalent to performing a thousand yajnas (sacrifices).

  • Dwarka Mahatmya: Glorifies Gomati as the sacred consort of Lord Krishna and a purifier of the world.

In essence, the Gomati River is not just a stream of water but a flow of divine consciousness, carrying blessings of Vishnu, Lakshmi, and Mother Earth — sanctifying all who come in contact with her sacred waters.
