गङ्गे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस्वति ।

नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलेऽस्मिन् सन्निधिं कुरु ॥

गंगा को दिव्य कृपा का स्वरूप माना गया है। ऋग्वेद में उन्हें “सर्वपापहरिणी” कहा गया है। उनके जल में स्नान या एक घूँट से सभी पाप धुल जाते हैं, मोक्ष प्राप्त होता है और अश्वमेध यज्ञ के बराबर पुण्य मिलता है।

यमुना को यम की बहन और भक्ति का स्वरूप कहा गया है। महाभारत में उनका जल “नील‑हरित, आत्मा को शांति देने वाला” बताया गया है। यमुना में स्नान से कर्म‑मालाएँ हटती हैं और आध्यात्मिक पुण्य मिलता है।

दक्षिण की गंगा कहलाने वाली गोदावरी को पद्म‑पुराण में मोक्षदायिनी कहा गया है। उनका सुनहरा‑रंगित जल एक हजार अश्वमेध यज्ञों के बराबर पुण्य देता है और मोक्ष की ओर ले जाता है।

सरस्वती ज्ञान, बुद्धि और शुद्धि की दिव्य नदी हैं। ऋग्वेद में कहा गया है कि उनका जल पीने से विद्या प्राप्त होती है और अज्ञान दूर होता है। एक घूँट से मन‑और आत्मा शुद्ध हो जाती है, जिससे ज्ञान की प्राप्ति होती है।

नर्मदा को शिव‑पुराण में “चलती हुई शिव” कहा गया है। उनका शांत, पारदर्शी प्रवाह मोक्ष प्रदान करता है और अश्वमेध यज्ञ के बराबर पुण्य देता है। नर्मदा में स्नान से सभी पाप हटते हैं।

सिंधु को ऋग्वेद में “देवताओं की महान नदी” कहा गया है। उनका तिरंगा‑नीला रंग शुद्धि और दिव्य रक्षा का प्रतीक है। एक घूँट से आत्मा शुद्ध होती है, अश्वमेध यज्ञ के बराबर पुण्य मिलता है और मोक्ष में मदद मिलती है।

कावेरी को स्कंद‑पुराण में “माता कावेरी” कहा गया है। उनका कोहरा‑हरा प्रवाह समृद्धि, स्वास्थ्य और आध्यात्मिक पुण्य प्रदान करता है। कावेरी में स्नान से पाप धुलते हैं और देवी की कृपा प्राप्त होती है।

The Ganga is the personification of divine grace. The Rig‑Veda calls her “the purifier of all.” A dip in her waters or even a sip is said to wash away sins, grant moksha and bestow the merit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.

Yamuna is praised as the sister of Yama and the embodiment of devotion. The Mahabharata describes her waters as “bluish‑green, soothing the soul.” Bathing in Yamuna is believed to remove karmic impurities and grant spiritual merit.

Known as the “Ganga of the South,” Godavari is extolled in the Padma‑Purana as a liberating river. Its golden‑tinged water is said to confer the merit of a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices and lead the devotee toward liberation.

Saraswati is the celestial river of knowledge, wisdom and purity. The Rig‑Veda declares that drinking her water bestows vidya (knowledge) and dispels ignorance. A sip is believed to cleanse the mind and soul, granting enlightenment.

The Narmada is revered as a “moving Shiva” in the Shiva‑Purana. Its calm, transparent flow is said to grant moksha and the merit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice. Bathing in Narmada is believed to remove all sins.

The Sindhu is hailed in the Rig‑Veda as the “great river of the gods.” Its turquoise hue symbolizes purity and divine protection. A sip is said to cleanse the soul, grant the merit of an Ashvamedha and aid in liberation.

Kaveri is celebrated as “Mother Kaveri” in the Skanda‑Purana. Her soft greenish flow is believed to bestow prosperity, health and spiritual merit. Bathing in Kaveri is said to wash away sins and grant the blessings of the goddess.
