पद्मपुराण/ Padma Puran

The Padma Purana is one of the eighteen great Mahapuranas of Hinduism. It holds special significance in the Vaishnava tradition, as it primarily glorifies Lord Vishnu, His incarnations, and the path of devotion (bhakti). This Purana is considered one of the most extensive, both in length and in scope, covering cosmology, philosophy, rituals, pilgrimages, and spiritual teachings.

Key Features:

1. Structure –
   The Padma Purana contains about 55,000 verses, making it one of the largest Puranas. It is divided into six sections (Khandas):

   • Srishti Khanda (Creation)

   • Bhumi Khanda (Earth)

   • Svarga Khanda (Heaven)

   • Patala Khanda (Netherworld)

   • Uttara Khanda (Later teachings)

   • Uttarardha Khanda (Final section)

2. Main Themes –

   • Creation of the Universe – The origin of the cosmos, role of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

   • Religion and Devotion – Importance of righteous conduct, devotion, rituals, charity, and penance.

   • Pilgrimage Significance – Detailed glorification of sacred places like Ganga, Prayag, Pushkar, Narmada, and Gaya.

   • Avatars of Vishnu – Elaborate accounts of Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, and other incarnations.

   • Dialogues and Teachings – Narrations involving sages like Narada, Bhrigu, and others on Dharma, Moksha, and Bhakti.

3. Emphasis on Bhakti (Devotion) –
   The Purana declares that in the age of Kali Yuga, liberation (moksha) can be attained primarily through chanting of the Divine Name (Nama Sankirtana) and sincere devotion to God.

4. Spiritual Teachings –

   • Importance of Satsang (association with saints).

   • Vaishnava principles of worship.

   • Values of non-violence, compassion, truth, and surrender to God.

पद्म पुराण अठारह महापुराणों में से एक प्रमुख पुराण है। इसका संबंध वैष्णव परंपरा से अधिक माना जाता है, क्योंकि इसमें भगवान विष्णु और उनके विभिन्न अवतारों का महत्त्वपूर्ण वर्णन मिलता है। यह ग्रंथ धर्म, भक्ति, कर्मकांड, तीर्थमहात्म्य और जीवन की आध्यात्मिक साधना के लिए अत्यंत उपयोगी है।

मुख्य विशेषताएँ :

1. संरचना –
   पद्म पुराण में लगभग 55,000 श्लोक बताए जाते हैं, जो इसे सबसे विस्तृत पुराणों में से एक बनाते हैं। इसमें छह खंड (काण्ड) हैं – सृष्टिखण्ड, भूमिखण्ड, स्वर्गखण्ड, पातालखण्ड, उत्तरखण्ड और उत्तरार्धखण्ड।

2. विषय-वस्तु –

   • सृष्टि का वर्णन – जगत की उत्पत्ति, ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव की महिमा।

   • धर्म और भक्ति – भक्ति मार्ग की श्रेष्ठता, तीर्थों का माहात्म्य और यज्ञ, दान, तप आदि की महिमा।

   • तीर्थ महात्म्य – गंगा, प्रयाग, पुष्कर, नर्मदा, गया आदि तीर्थों का विशेष वर्णन।

   • राम और कृष्ण चरित्र – भगवान राम और कृष्ण के अवतारों का विस्तृत विवेचन।

   • नारद, भृगु, महर्षि आदि के संवाद – जिनमें धर्म, मोक्ष और भक्ति के रहस्य बताए गए हैं।

3. भक्ति का महत्त्व –
   इसमें कहा गया है कि कलियुग में केवल नाम-संकीर्तन और हरि-भक्ति से ही मोक्ष प्राप्त किया जा सकता है।

4. विशेष शिक्षाएँ –

   • सत्संग और साधु-सेवा का महत्त्व।

   • वैष्णव धर्माचार का प्रचार।

   • अहिंसा, दया और सत्य का पालन।
